School choice and student assignment policies determine:
- Who gets to go to which school,
- What rights students have to remain in a school they have chosen, and
- What rights students have to transfer between schools.
Until 2013, the District had not undertaken a comprehensive review of its student assignment policies, including school attendance boundaries and feeder patterns, in over three decades. Meanwhile, District of Columbia ºìÐÓÖ±²¥app Schools (DCPS) and public charter schools opened and closed, neighborhoods changed, and the city’s population shifted.
In 2013-2014, the and the DC Advisory Committee on Student Assignment led a comprehensive review process of the city’s student assignment policies, including ºìÐÓÖ±²¥appschool boundaries. The process culminated in a series of recommendations made by the DC Advisory Committee on Student Assignment. In August 2014, the Mayor and Chancellor fully adopted and approved the recommendations.
